The versatile 3-in-1 Patrol Down Coat

A new standard for adaptable weather protection

The urban environment can be one of varied extremes: from bracing morning air and midday showers to the biting evening freeze. As we move through the city, we move through the elements. With the Patrol Down Coat, we’ve set a new standard for versatile protection that responds to the city’s most relentless winter weather.

The best materials for the worst conditions

The intuitive new Patrol Down Coat reflects our lasting dedication to finding the most innovative solutions to the most demanding conditions. Each element of its 3-in-1 layering system employs condition-specific technical materials and construction methods.

Its hardshell outer is made from the newest 3-layer GORE-TEX® Pro that provides robust, and now more breathable protection from the elements. Gore-Tex® Pro is premium technology for extreme wet weather conditions and provides completely windproof, waterproof, breathable protection for intense, repeated use.

The coat’s inner down layer uses pioneering Down Composite Mapping to provide optimum levels of insulation for different parts of the body. Down Composite Mapping uses a combination of premium natural and synthetic insulation materials in targeted areas to maximize their primary performance benefits: CoreloftTM is warm when wet while the coat’s 850 fill grey goose down has superior warmth retention.

CoreloftTM is a resilient and lightweight insulation by Arc’teryx. The quick-drying synthetic material retains its warmth in wet conditions, is resistant to compacting and is easy to maintain.

Versatility that looks complete in any combination

‘The problem with most 3-in-1 layering systems is that they feel like incomplete parts when worn as separate pieces’, explains design director Taka Kasuga. ‘We wanted to develop a design solution that has all the protection of our best technologies, the functionality of a modular 3-in-1 jacket but that feels complete when worn in any combination.’

The answer to the challenge lay in the creation of a new attachment system that fastened the two jackets together. Anel Jordaan, the senior design developer who worked on the Patrol Down Coat, recalls ‘starting work on the jacket in October 2015. In the early stages of the project, a key design objective was to develop an attachment system strong enough to keep the different layers in place, but discreet enough to not be seen.’

After months of development and several prototype models, Jordaan and the team had developed a new unobtrusive system of stowable, easy-release snaps that achieved just that.

With the intuitive 3-in-1 Patrol Down Coat our designers and developers have realised a new level of modular adaptability, sleek design aesthetic with uncompromising weather protection.
